A Stepwise Guide to Turn on the Auto HDR Mode on your Windows 11

 

Even if your gaming PC can support a 4K monitor, you’ll still need to turn on the high dynamic range (HDR) output if you really want to optimize your visuals. HDR displays offer a more vibrant, richer color palette to better use those extra pixels on higher-resolution displays. Although it isn’t quite HDR, the feature uses a compatible display’s ability to improve colors in games without sacrificing performance. Although Auto HDR is part of Windows main display settings, you won’t be able to benefit from it unless you have an HDR monitor. If you don’t have a compatible monitor connected to your computer, Windows 11 won’t let you use the feature. Here’s how to enable it if you have it.

Check if the monitor supports HDR

Auto HDR mode should theoretically work with all HDR-supporting monitors and TVs connected to a Windows 11 PC. Make sure you’re utilizing an HDR10-compatible HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 monitor. HDR requires a GPU that can provide the required resolution. If you’re not sure if your display supports HDR, check the Windows 11 Settings menu first. Select System Display HDR from the Settings menu, then select your HDR-compatible display from the drop-down menu. Select the ‘Display Capabilities’ option while the HDR-compatible display is active. Use this feature; you’ll need to connect a monitor that supports HDR. However, if HDR is marked as ‘Supported,’ you’re OK to go ahead. Auto HDR may turn on automatically for you, but if it doesn’t, you may turn it on yourself using the instructions below.

To enable Auto HDR features, you must first access the Windows 11 Settings menu.

  1. Initiate the process by right-clicking the desktop.
  2. Next, click on the Display Settings option.
  3. Make sure that Use HDR is turned on.
  4. The HDR settings menu can be accessed by clicking User HDR.
  5. Check to see whether Auto HDR is on or not.

It’s as simple as that. You can also enable Auto HDR from the Xbox Game Bar if you’re already in-game and want a friendlier approach to turn it on without having to tab out of what you’re playing. 

  • By pressing Win + G, you can access the Xbox Game Bar.
  • Select the Settings cog from the drop-down menu.
  • From the sidebar, select Gaming Features.
  • For HDR settings, check both boxes.
  • Shut down the Xbox Game Bar.
  • You also receive access to an intensity slider when you use the Xbox Game Bar approach, so you may alter the level of the Auto HDR on a game-by-game basis while playing.

When you launch a game that supports Auto HDR on Windows 11, you should get a notification if Auto HDR is enabled on your PC in the top-right corner. If Auto HDR does not work the first time, you run your game, completely exit the game and reload it to enable the option. This should work for games that support Auto HDR, but only if Microsoft has approved it.
